Dear Potential Donor:
In an effort to meet the growing rehabilitation needs of our wounded service members and veterans who have incurred vision loss, this past summer the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) in partnership with the U.S. Paralympics launched a new program called Mission Vision.
As you know, there are thousands of military service members returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts with permanent physical disabilities. According to research published in the Survey of Ophthalmology, there are more than 1,400 service members from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom that have undergone surgery to their eyes. That is 13% of all seriously wounded, the highest percentage for eye wounds in any major conflict dating back to World War I.
With the support of private donors like you, USABA will provide military service members and veterans who have suffered eye injuries full funding to attend the 2009 USABA Mission Vision program to be held in Colorado Springs, CO, July 28-August 3. During this event, USABA national coaches and Paralympic athletes will provide each participant the necessary skills in the sports of Track and Field, Powerlifting, Judo, Wrestling, Swimming, Triathlon, Archery and Goaball (team sport for blind athletes). Participants will gain confidence to successfully integrate into their hometown community-based sports programs with the long-term goal of maintaining healthy lifestyles.
Your thoughtful donation will assist us in our efforts to provide the much needed program.
