Real Life Story

Letter from a Seva intern, on sight-restoring operations she observed in Tibet:

Today, something hit home - in a big way. I went to clinic at MZK and watched Dr. Chundak with an elderly Tibetan women. Seeing them sitting on a bench, eyes clenched shut, praying over and over in concentration. Or seeing an 18 year old boy come in with cataract, totally blind for four years. Scared.

Then we went to surgery. I stood there the whole day, watching cataract operation after cataract operation. I watched Dr. Chundak operate on a 12 year old girl who has been totally blind since she was 8. She was so scared, lying on the bed that her whole body was shaking. A nurse held her hand, stroking it, comforting her. As he removed her cataract I asked, "Do you mean that she might be able to SEE tomorrow?" "Yes", he answered. And I was awe-struck. Tomorrow she might be able to see -- light and color and shape.

I can only imagine what was going through that little girl's head at that moment. I did all I could to keep from crying right then and there.

Certain things bring you back to the essence of being alive. Those days don't come often. But today was one of those days.
