In 2006, Mote Marine Laboratory created an underwater coral nursery. Mote is a leader in coral reef research and restoration where scientists are studying more than 20 species of corals.
For the past six years, the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge (CWVC) and youths from SCUBAnauts International have been volunteering to help Mote with coral restoration. CWVC improves the lives of wounded veterans through high-adventure, therapeutic challenges while furthering the physiological, biomedical and pathological sciences associated with their injuries. SCUBAnauts International involves teens in the marine sciences with intensive dive and science training.
By bringing their mission-driven skills and expertise to this project, these veterans are now playing a crucial role in reef restoration. During the mission, warriors tested new prosthetic limbs underwater while also mentoring their young partners.
In 2017, this unique group planted 500 corals, the most-ever in a single day since the partnership began. The group has planted more than 1,600 corals in an area unofficially named "Hero's Reef" in honor of all current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
We can only continue this unique partnership to advance restoration while serving others, thanks to support from people like you. Please support Mote Marine Laboratory today. Thank you!
